Mother and Sun

While traveling abroad, I met a woman from Italy who had been sadly mistreated by her husband; however, when she talked about her child, she became transformed with light. So, the theme of the sculpture is that of a mother’s love for her child. When placed in front of an external light source (representing spiritual love), the onyx will illuminate translucently; when the candle is lit, the stone glows, from the love, within. The onyx was core drilled, and the central, 7 inch wide, 25 ½ inch deep hollow shelters a tall, votive candle, which gradually decreases in height after lighting, internally illuminating the interior of the onyx. Random spaces have also been carved in the front and sides of the onyx sculpture to allow small amounts of light to spill from the hollow.
