Minnesota Pipestone Figure

Minnesota Pipestone Figure provides a window into the viewer’s imagination. The image on the front of the stone is open to interpretation. The reverse of the stone has been randomly polished to show off the very palpable color values of the pipestone, and might suggest the back of a persimmon blanket, draped around a huddled figure. The obverse, however, reflects a clear image, but one that differs depending on the viewer. The stone itself, is a triumph of geology. This intact a slab of Minnesota pipestone is rare to find, and the rich, profoundly deep burgundy color helps explain why the raw stone is so expensive. Pipestone is a sedimentary rock, built up, layer by layer, over millions of years. The stone is easy to grind, but fiendishly difficult to cut, and impossible to chisel. Protected by law, pipestone is usually found only on reservations, and may only be procured by Native Americans. The heavy, ochre, South Dakota granite base perfectly complements the piece, which turns a full 360 degrees.
